An Upside-Down Canvas Stuns Weekend Worshipers

Veblen, SD · October 3, 2026

Overcast skies are keeping temperatures mild today, making it prime morning weather to scout early pumpkin patches before nightfall brings out the ghost hunters.

The Lead

Worshipers in neighboring Britton saw a blank canvas transform into an unexpected work of sacred art this week during a service that brought scripture to life on easel. Visiting pastor and painter Paul Oman took his place before the First Lutheran Church congregation, working vigorously with acrylics on a large vertical canvas while scripture readings and choir hymns filled the sanctuary. Oman painted the entire piece completely upside down, keeping parishioners guessing until the closing blessing when he rotated the canvas to reveal a striking portrait of Jesus surrounded by children.

Arranged by Pastor Lexy Carson through a memorial gift honoring the late Rodney Eikamp, the event coincided with third graders receiving their first church Bibles. The finished painting now hangs in the fellowship hall, where congregation members lingered well past the postlude to study the brushwork.
