Local Foundation Adds Two High Schoolers as Full Voting Trustees

Veblen, SD · October 1, 2026

October rolls in under a blanket of gray clouds today, just in time for the runners heading out for this afternoon’s cross country meet. Settle in with a warm cup—there is plenty moving across the county as the new month begins.

The Lead

The Britton Area Foundation is giving the next generation direct decision-making power over local philanthropy. The foundation expanded its governing board from seven to nine adult members—welcoming Emily Van Lith and Rose Kraft—and instituted two full voting student seats, filled by high school senior Carter Chapin and junior Ruthie Moeckly. Both student trustees carry full voting weight on grant distributions and will earn a $1,000 scholarship upon completing their term.

Since distributing an initial $335 grant in 1996, the foundation has invested endowment earnings through the South Dakota Community Foundation to deliver more than $1 million across 250 grants for civic projects, parks, and youth initiatives throughout Marshall County communities, including Veblen. Board President Patty Roehr noted that bringing teenagers into the boardroom deepens community outreach across age brackets before the next grant review cycle opens.
