Kickoff at the Honey Bowl Tonight — Plus Weekend Live Music

Uvalde, TX · October 15, 2026

Keep an umbrella handy behind the wheel today — scattered showers will move through before kickoff under the Honey Bowl lights this evening.

The Lead

Local healthcare and civic leadership mark the end of an era following the passing of Dr. Harry O. Watkins at age 90. A homegrown surgeon who returned home in 1968 after serving in the Air Force, Dr. Watkins spent more than 52 years on the medical staff at Uvalde Memorial Hospital, including a tenure as Chief of Staff.

Beyond the operating room, he devoted 28 years to the Southwest Texas College Board of Trustees, guiding the regional institution through major campus development and serving as board president. Colleagues remembered him this week not only as a skilled physician, but as a dedicated leader who championed rural higher education. The college board convenes for its regular session at 6 p.m. tonight on Garner Field Road with an empty seat at Place 6 and a legacy spanning generations.
