Downtown Mount Pleasant is transforming today as road crews, stage builders, and food vendors roll in to prepare for the annual Glass and Ethnic Festival. Beginning this morning, detours are in place along Washington Street, Main Street, and Diamond Street to allow crews to erect the three performance stages—the Gazebo, Washington Street Stage, and Old Town Stage—and lay out booths for dozens of regional craftspeople and food purveyors. For township commuters heading south from United along Route 981, traffic will be routed around the central business district onto Church and Eagle streets. The festival officially opens tomorrow at 11:00 AM, kicking off three days of glassmaking demonstrations, heritage foods, and continuous live music across the borough. Barricades remain in position through Sunday evening's teardown, so keep those side-street bypass routes in mind whenever traveling south.
