Student-Crafted Steel Tribute Unveiled on Campus

The Lead
A new steel monument standing outside the Student Achievement Center at Westmoreland County Community College carries hands-on work from right here in our backyard. Dedicated Wednesday ahead of the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11, the striking installation features a steel American flag flanked by silhouettes cut with the words "remember" and "community." Six students spent two and a half months designing and fabricating the piece inside the college’s MADE innovation lab, utilizing advanced metalworking machinery to honor first responders, service members, and everyday citizens. Two Mount Pleasant residents, Megan Ranker and Luke Sechrist, were among the fabricators who brought the concept from digital designs to finished metal. The finished tribute now permanently anchors the campus memorial courtyard, open for public viewing starting this morning.
