New Wave Break Planned to Save Washed-Out Point Place Path
Toledo, OH · October 11, 2026
A steady mist is hanging over the Maumee this morning. Grab an extra layer before venturing out for Sunday coffee, especially if you are tracking down warm apple butter kettles or live strings in the park.
The Lead
FEMA recently completed its public comment review on the environmental assessment for the North Summit Street Shoreline Restoration Project, advancing a major plan to fortify a vulnerable stretch of Maumee Bay.
A 1,600-foot section of North Summit between Cullen Park and the Point Place Lighthouse has suffered severe erosion from Lake Erie storm surges, leaving portions of the popular multi-use embankment path structurally undermined and impassable for pedestrians and cyclists. The proposed remedy calls for a 1,310-foot rock armor revetment, an earthen berm, and an offshore wave break near the Detwiler Ditch culvert outfall to knock down heavy wave action before it hits the bank. Crucially for neighbors who fish and stroll the water, public shoreline access will remain intact while the recreation trail gets completely rebuilt. With the federal review window now closed, municipal engineers and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers are coordinating final permit approvals.

- Ottawa Park Amphitheater
- Tucked into a wooded natural bowl designed as a bird sanctuary, this 1935 amphitheater was hand-crafted by WPA stonemasons using 500 tons of local Whitehouse quarry stone. Generations of concertgoers still settle onto its limestone tiers under trees planted nearly a century ago.
