Ground Breaks on the New $25 Million Money Museum

Toledo, OH · October 6, 2026

Lacing up your walking shoes for an early riverfront stroll is the sharpest way to take in this crisp morning. Plenty is moving across town once the morning chill wears off.

The Lead

Across from the Toledo Museum of Art, a quiet architectural gem is preparing for a world-class second act. Ground officially broke Monday on a $25 million restoration of the historic Professional Arts Building at 1838 Parkwood Avenue, the future international headquarters and Money Museum of the American Numismatic Society. The move brings an astonishing 800,000-piece collection of coins, medals, and ancient currency—dating back over four millennia—from Manhattan directly to the Old West End border.

The society selected the location over Chicago and Philadelphia, drawn by the neighborhood's Art Deco fabric and deep cultural partnerships. The finished facility will house public galleries, educational spaces, and a 100,000-volume research library. Crews will spend the coming months retrofitting the building’s interior before welcoming the first school groups and traveling scholars.
