A New 59-Acre Nature Preserve Opens Along the River

Toledo, OH · October 3, 2026

Cider kettles are already simmering across town, and brisk October sunshine makes today built for wandering. Grab a sweater before you head out toward the river.

The Lead

The City of Toledo has officially opened Pontiac Preserve, a brand-new 59-acre waterfront park along the lower Maumee River at 1300 North Summit Street.

Once known as Penn 7, the parcel spent decades as a confined dredging disposal site closed off from the public. Funded through Great Lakes restoration partnerships, the multi-year project stripped away industrial fill to restore critical wetland ecology near Maumee Bay. Visitors will find an accessible one-mile walking trail winding through native grasses, elevated overlook decks, and dedicated habitat for migrating waterfowl.

The opening reconnects north-side neighborhoods to the water while buffering the river's mouth. Park gates are open daily from dawn to dusk, with permanent historical markers arriving along the trail later this month.
