October chill is lingering on the porch rail this morning, but clear skies make it an ideal day to wander the boardwalks or catch the nearby cannon salutes. Grab an extra layer before heading out.

The Lead

A familiar trailhead just down the road looks noticeably brighter this week. Local painter Linda Miller has completed a custom Virginia LOVEworks sculpture installed at Greensprings Interpretive Trail, drawing directly from the two decades she spent walking its wooden boardwalks. Instead of commercial block lettering, each character highlights the wildlife that frequents the surrounding beaver ponds and tidal marsh, prominently featuring a great blue heron and an osprey in mid-stride.

County parks staff tapped Miller after crossing paths with her on the trail, hoping a neighborhood artist’s eye would help anchor the preserve’s reputation along the statewide birding circuit. For regular walkers navigating the 3.5-mile loop behind Jamestown High, the finished piece offers a quiet greeting before disappearing into the pines.
