Historic Marker Approved for Civil War Emancipation Site

Toano, VA · October 7, 2026

A dense blanket of morning fog is slow to lift off the pastures, but cooler afternoon air promises crisp walking weather. Pack a sweater if you plan to catch the outdoor music at Sullivan Square later today.

The Lead

A newly approved state historical marker will soon stand on Jamestown Island, commemorating an extraordinary Civil War escape that transformed the local shoreline into a beacon of freedom. The Virginia Department of Historic Resources authorized the marker, titled “Amblers House and Self-Emancipation at Jamestown,” following a nomination by the Virginia Racial Healing Institute.

In May 1862, following the Battle of Williamsburg, more than 100 enslaved individuals seized the opportunity to escape bondage by reaching the island, which had fallen under Union control. The marker will be erected near the historic brick ruins of Amblers House, documenting the courage of the families who risked everything along the James River. Sponsoring organizers and the National Park Service are coordinating logistics to schedule a public dedication ceremony once fabrication finishes this winter.
