Fall Plant Sale and Night Market Headline the Weekend Ahead
Spring Hill, FL · October 8, 2026
Grey clouds are rolling through early today, but the passing rain showers shouldn't stop you from catching tonight's civic honors downtown or finding a dry trivia table.
The Lead
Hundreds of residents, former Scouts, and conservationists packed Winemiller Hall at Nativity Lutheran Church this week for a public workshop regarding the Sand Hill Scout Reservation. The Greater Tampa Bay Area Council has applied for a large-scale comprehensive plan amendment to rezone 604 acres—nearly half of the 1,300-acre reservation along Cortez Boulevard—from recreational use to a Planned Development District.
Concerns center on the legacy of late benefactor Larry Die Polder, who deeded the property in 1978, as well as watershed impacts above the sensitive Diepolder cave network. Scout leadership maintains that trimming underutilized acreage will secure long-term endowment funding for the camp's core facilities. State agencies are currently reviewing the application ahead of a formal hearing before the Hernando County Planning and Zoning Commission next month.
