Sunday Brunch Market Brings Fresh Breads and Honey Today

Spring Hill, FL · October 4, 2026

Flashing lights along Commercial Way kept many neighbors awake late into the night, but the sun is up and the corridor is quiet again this morning. Take things at an easy pace today as you head out to the brunch market or the afternoon matinee.

The Lead

An overnight shooting investigation is underway in Spring Hill after a suspect fired at Hernando County deputies along Lori Drive on Saturday evening. Deputies initially attempted a traffic stop near Commercial Way following an earlier domestic battery call involving threats. When the driver stopped near Mavis Tires and Brakes, he stepped out and immediately opened fire on the approaching patrol cruiser. The deputy reversed to safety as backup converged, but the suspect continued shooting, prompting two deputies to return fire and strike the suspect multiple times. No law enforcement personnel or bystanders were injured, though a stray bullet damaged a vehicle parked at the adjacent Arby's. Both deputies have been placed on standard administrative leave with pay while the Florida Department of Law Enforcement conducts an independent inquiry into the incident.

Spotlight & Story

  • Chocachatti
    • Long before it graced school buses and road signs, the Muscogee phrase chuko-chatty translated literally to "red house." Creek migrants settled the fertile hammock prairie in 1767, giving Hernando County its earliest named community centuries before yellow school buses rolled down California Street.
