Permit Scam Advisory Issued — What to Watch Out For

Spring Hill, FL · August 6, 2026

A muggy Thursday with scattered afternoon rain is on tap today, making it a good morning to double-check your inbox before opening any unexpected county notices.

The Lead

Hernando County officials are warning residents, local business owners, and contractors about an active telephone and email scam impersonating county Development Services staff.

Fraudulent communications claim that building or code enforcement permits have been suspended and demand immediate wire transfers, credit card payments, or digital signatures for fake invoices. Official permitting, fee payments, and document verifications are strictly processed through Hernando County’s official online Civic Access portal.

County staff urge anyone receiving suspicious calls or payment demands to avoid clicking links or sharing financial details, and instead report the outreach directly to the Development Services Department at (352) 754-4057 or file a complaint with the FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center.
