The Lead
At this week's City Council meeting, the dais formally commended 10-year-old Anthony Guzzetta and his father, Jerome, for rescuing five swimmers caught in a powerful rip current north of the pier. While swimming with a boogie board and swim glove, the pair spotted two struggling adults being dragged offshore. Anthony passed along his gear and calmly coached them on how to swim parallel to shore to escape the current. Seconds later, three stranded teenagers were pulled out into the same rip. Anthony helped secure two of them before paddling to shore to direct Marine Safety personnel toward the third submerged teen.
Beyond recognizing personal courage, council members highlighted the vital role played by the municipal Junior Lifeguard program, which trains hundreds of youth in ocean safety every summer. The city's Marine Safety division expects to announce details for next year's program enrollment during spring budget hearings.

Spotlight & Story
- Anaheim Landing
- In 1864, Anaheim winegrowers established their own ocean freight wharf here at the mouth of Alamitos Bay to dodge San Pedro’s steep harbor fees. Schooners loaded casks of Zinfandel directly off the mudflats until the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived in 1875.
