Rare Sea Turtle Eggs Moved to Safety Ahead of High Swells

On Friday, federal wildlife biologists with NOAA Fisheries and local marine safety crews made the urgent decision to excavate the unprecedented olive ridley sea turtle nest discovered along the sand earlier this month. With building ocean swells and coastal flood advisories threatening to overtop the tide line this weekend, standing water would have smothered the fragile nest. Crews carefully removed approximately one hundred viable eggs and transported them to the Molina Animal Care Center at the Aquarium of the Pacific. The clutch is now resting securely in climate-controlled sand containers, where experts will monitor incubation over the next 45 to 60 days. Once the hatchlings emerge, marine biologists plan to return them to the exact stretch of local shoreline where their mother nested so they can crawl safely out into the Pacific.
