Ocean air is cool and gray this morning as the holiday weekend gets underway. Between festival season launching just down the road and evening tunes on the calendar, there is plenty lined up once you step outside.

With a strong southerly swell rolling toward Orange County shores for the holiday weekend, city public works crews finished shaping a protective sand berm along the north beach near the San Gabriel River jetty yesterday. The bulldozed embankment acts as a frontline buffer for low-lying beachfront residences along Ocean Avenue, protecting properties against wave runup and seawater inundation during peak high tides. Marine Safety personnel have placed extra lifeguard towers on watch, cautioning swimmers and beachgoers that heavy shorebreak and unpredictable rip currents will persist through Monday afternoon. Free sand and unfilled sandbags remain available for residents at city fire stations along Central Avenue and Marina Drive. Lifeguards will keep color-coded hazard flags updated on the sand as conditions shift.
