New Beach Mat Expands Shoreline Access at First Street
Seal Beach, CA · August 23, 2026
Morning ocean mist is clearing over the pier, making way for a bright, warm Sunday on the sand.
The Lead
Heading across the sand down to the surf just got much smoother at First Street. The city recently completed the rollout of a third heavy-duty beach accessibility mat, creating a firm, continuous pathway from the paved promenade directly toward the tide line. Funded through coastal grant programs, the project also supplied a specialized power track wheelchair that residents and visitors with mobility challenges can reserve for public use.
This new installation joins existing beach mats at Eighth and Tenth Streets, closing a crucial gap on the western end of the waterfront. Marine safety personnel will oversee the maintenance of the mat and manage reservations for the power track wheelchair at the lifeguard headquarters. Waterfront visitors can now navigate the sandy stretch with far greater ease through the remainder of the summer season.
