Lines Out at the Pier Today for the Annual Kids Fishing Derby
Seal Beach, CA · August 22, 2026
Fishing rods are out on the boardwalk early this morning as young anglers gear up for summer’s favorite tradition. Marine air keeps things cool, but there’s plenty of activity along the coast today.
The Lead
The pier belongs to young anglers this morning as the 34th Annual Rotary Kids Fishing Derby gets underway at 7:00 AM. Free to children ages 15 and under, the long-standing tradition brings together hundreds of local families, volunteers, and mentors for a morning of saltwater fishing and coastal community spirit.
Organized by the Rotary Club of Los Alamitos, Cypress & Seal Beach, the derby provides loaner tackle, bait, and hands-on guidance for novice anglers alongside competitive awards for the biggest catches across three age divisions. Volunteers from the Seal Beach Lions Club start the morning on the boardwalk, serving up a complimentary pancake breakfast for participating kids and their families.
Registration opens on-site at the pier entrance at sunrise, with lines dropping into the water shortly after and final weigh-ins concluding at noon.
