Building relationships before trouble starts proved to be the winning formula for local police at McGaugh Elementary School this year. Following the conclusion of its inaugural Safety Seal Program, the Seal Beach Police Department shared findings this week from the yearlong initiative, which connected officers with roughly 700 elementary students through routine, positive classroom visits and mentoring rather than emergency calls.
Designed as an alternative to traditional school resource officer models, the program focused on early trust-building through casual lunchroom chats, campus walks, and interactive safety lessons. Department leadership noted that creating familiar, friendly interactions significantly reduced student anxiety during routine safety drills and campus visits.
With the first academic year in the books, police officials plan to refine the curriculum ahead of the upcoming fall semester and present the model to neighboring coastal departments evaluating youth engagement strategies.
