Front Street Reopens Today with New Pedestrian Plaza
Salem, OR · June 6, 2026
The clouds are hanging low over the Willamette this morning, but they shouldn't dampen the festivities on Front Street. The long-awaited pedestrian improvements are finally ready for their first Saturday crowd, and the fresh asphalt is officially open for business.
📰 The Lead
After eighteen months of orange cones and detours, the Front Street Transformation project officially wraps up this morning. The city is hosting a ribbon-cutting at 10:00 AM to debut the new Pioneer Plaza, a curbless section designed to host street fairs and food trucks while slowing traffic near the waterfront.
The project added three miles of protected bike lanes and replaced aging water mains that had served the downtown core since the 1950s. For residents, this means a much smoother connection between Riverfront Park and the shops on Liberty Street. While cars are back on the asphalt, the new signal timing favors pedestrians, so expect a slower drive but a much safer walk. The final barricades come down just in time for the afternoon commute.

📸 Spotlight & Story
- The Acid Ball
- This 40,000-pound steel sphere at Riverfront Park was once a utilitarian piece of the Boise Cascade paper mill. It spent decades holding sulfite liquor used to break down wood chips. Today, its metallic surface reflects the river, a massive, silent anchor to the city's industrial past.
