Steam rises off coffee mugs along the pedestrian bridge this morning as crisp autumn air takes hold. If you are heading out for a riverfront walk or thrifting in the West End, bundle up before stepping out the door.

The Lead

Where elevated ramps of Interstate 195 once severed the downtown shoreline from the Jewelry District, the 195 District Park is settling into its role as a permanent public living room. The new 3,500-square-foot park pavilion, designed by Architecture Research Office, is now fully active along the west bank of the Providence River. Anchored by Seven Stars Bakery and The Guild Brewing Company, the cedar-wrapped pavilion delivers year-round dining, shaded outdoor porches, and essential public amenities directly beside the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Pedestrian Bridge.

For residents who watched the highway move south years ago, the pavilion turns what was long an open grassy expanse into a four-season neighborhood anchor. Its green roof captures stormwater before it reaches the river, while panoramic glass doors roll open during mild afternoons. With seasonal foot traffic expected to hold through late autumn, the park commission next turns its focus toward winter programming and cold-weather lawn installations.
