Atwells Avenue Closes to Traffic at 5 PM for Four-Day Street Festival

Providence, RI · October 9, 2026

Delivery trucks and tent poles are already staking out Atwells Avenue this morning. If your evening commute usually cuts across the Hill, map out a detour before the barricades slide into place at 5:00 PM.

The Lead

Atwells Avenue is swapping vehicle traffic for strolling crowds this afternoon as the 41st Annual Federal Hill festival takes over the corridor through Monday. Beginning at 5:00 PM today, the avenue closes entirely from Dean Street to Sutton Street, making room for more than 80 artisan and food vendors alongside three outdoor performance stages. Over two dozen neighborhood kitchens—from classic bakeries to long-running red-sauce spots—are extending outdoor seating into the roadway for the long holiday weekend. For residents who navigate the neighborhood daily, expect detours on surrounding side streets and limited parking around Spruce and Dean streets, with municipal lots operating on event rates. Live music begins tonight at 6:00 PM on the Dean and Sutton stages, followed by the first round of open-air cooking demonstrations tomorrow at noon outside America Street.
