River Braziers Light Up for Flames of Hope Tonight

Providence, RI · October 3, 2026

Stepping out into Saturday with an extra layer is wise, but save your evening stroll for the riverfront once the torches hit the water.

The Lead

Downtown riverways will carry woodsmoke and candlelight tonight as the Gloria Gemma Breast Cancer Resource Foundation marks the 20th anniversary of its Flames of Hope celebration alongside WaterFire. After gusty coastal storms forced the cancellation of last weekend's scheduled lighting, river braziers return this evening with a focused illumination across Memorial Park and the Michael S. Van Leesten Memorial Pedestrian Bridge.

Onshore gatherings begin at 5:30 PM, leading into the signature Illuminations of Life procession across the pedestrian bridge at 6:45 PM, where hundreds of torchbearers carry flames in honor of cancer survivors and loved ones lost. Braziers will stay lit along the river until 10:00 PM, giving downtown evening walkers an unhurried stroll beside the water before full lightings resume mid-month.
