Downtown Transit Shifts to Dyer Street Starting Friday Morning

Catch the river breeze while you can this morning before braziers light up the pedestrian bridge tonight. Between sunset acoustic sets and third-Thursday gallery hops, your evening commute might easily turn into an impromptu night out.
The Lead
Commuters heading downtown tomorrow morning should prepare for a complete change of habit at the central transit hub. Starting with the first run Friday morning and lasting through the weekend, the Rhode Island Public Transit Authority will detour 41 bus lines around Kennedy Plaza and shut down vehicle access along Washington Street to clear room for major festival crowds.
Nearly every bus stop usually located around Kennedy Plaza is moving south to a temporary corridor along Dyer Street, stretching between Dorrance and Ship streets. Only express routes using Bus Stop X on Exchange Terrace remain in their customary spots. Transit ambassadors in high-visibility vests will be stationed along the perimeter to redirect passengers who find their regular shelters cordoned off. Regular routes and plaza berths will resume their normal schedules early Monday morning, giving transit riders a few days to adjust their walking routes.
