The Lead
Federal Hill's iconic pinecone landmark, La Pigna, is scheduled to be lowered from atop the Atwells Avenue arch today at 9:00 AM for repairs and restoration. The Federal Hill Commerce Association announced the temporary removal after structural assessments revealed winter weather wear that required shop-level attention.
Conservators plan to repair surface deterioration in a controlled workshop environment while prepping the sculpture for a proposed gold-gilded finish and enhanced architectural illumination. Ground-level improvements around the gateway, including upgraded planters and new benches at Garibaldi Park, will proceed simultaneously. Once artisans complete the delicate metalwork and gilding, the pinecone will return to its perch above the avenue.
