Downtown Transit Hub Moving to Train Station Site

Providence, RI · August 22, 2026

Train whistles and bus engines will soon share the same corner of downtown. Plenty happening across the neighborhood today before that transition arrives.

The Lead

The Rhode Island Public Transit Authority board voted unanimously to advance design and engineering work for a new central transit center at Station Park, directly adjacent to the Amtrak and MBTA rail station. The move will eventually relocate primary bus operations out of Kennedy Plaza, where the agency has operated its central outdoor hub for over four decades. The proposed indoor, climate-controlled facility aims to streamline connections between regional rail and city bus routes. With roughly $77 million already committed through federal grants and state transportation bonds, project managers at Next Wave Partners are drafting detailed architectural specifications and cost estimates. RIPTA plans to initiate formal public reviews and affordability checks as engineering plans take shape over the coming months.
