Fox Point Ferry Terminal Set for $13.5M Waterfront Upgrade

Providence, RI · August 18, 2026

Early fog is hovering over the harbor this morning, but clear skies and warm temperatures will take over soon enough. Tuesday brings big infrastructure news for our waterfront alongside a lineup of community gatherings.

The Lead

A major transformation is coming to the Fox Point waterfront following the approval of $13.5 million in federal funding for the ferry terminal at 25 Portugal Parkway. The popular seasonal hub, which connects passengers to Newport and Bristol via Seastreak Ferries, currently relies on temporary staging and basic dockage.

The new capital infusion will replace those temporary setups with a permanent ticketing pavilion featuring an indoor waiting lounge, public restrooms, and real-time transit information screens. Site work will also deliver ADA-compliant gangways, upgraded floating docks, seawall repairs, and enhanced stormwater treatment across the parking lot. Design engineering and site preparation are slated to move forward over the coming months as state transit officials finalize construction schedules.
