West Valley's Next Library Branch Has Its Official Name

Phoenix, AZ · October 8, 2026

Midway rides start spinning at noon over on McDowell Road, and another triple-digit afternoon reminds us that autumn in the desert arrives entirely on its own schedule.

The Lead

West Valley bookworms and families in the Estrella area have officially christened their future neighborhood hub: Manzanita Library. The Phoenix Public Library announced the winning selection following a community-wide vote that pitted five native Sonoran Desert flora options against one another, with the hardy, red-barked shrub edging out contenders Cliffrose, Creosote, Jojoba, and Senita.

The new branch will anchor the Estrella Civic Space, an expanding civic and park complex along West Lower Buckeye Road between 91st and 99th Avenues that already houses a local police precinct and fire station. The municipal practice of naming branch libraries after regional desert plants dates back to the 1960s, keeping civic expansions rooted in local ecology. Next, the proposed moniker goes to the Library Advisory Board and the Heritage Commission before heading to council chambers next month for formal sign-off.
