Local Firefighters Reunited With Neighbor They Saved
Perry, GA · October 6, 2026
Overcast skies are keeping conditions mild from the morning dog walk straight through twilight, when council convenes for its first full October session. Grab a light layer and ease into Tuesday.
The Lead
Four Perry firefighters stood shoulder-to-shoulder at station headquarters this week, but the guest presenting their commendations made the ceremony unforgettable. Weeks after collapsing in sudden cardiac arrest without a pulse, a local resident walked into the department healthy enough to help present Life Save Awards to the crew that kept him alive.
Firefighters Austin Williams, Brian Banks, Matthew Neesmith, and Shaquille Forrester arrived minutes after a 3:30 a.m. dispatch call, taking over chest compressions initiated by the resident's son and maintaining CPR until paramedics took charge. Fourteen minutes into the call, the resident regained a pulse and began breathing unassisted before being transported for hospital treatment. For first responders accustomed to rarely learning how emergency calls turn out, the handshake and shared awards in the apparatus bay delivered the rarest closure of all.
