Walk south from Carroll Street and you will quickly see the blueprint for downtown's next chapter. City leaders have begun executing the Jernigan Street Small Area Plan, a targeted initiative designed to stitch the central commercial core into the emerging warehouse district just to the south.
Crews are advancing streetscape improvements starting at the intersection of Carroll and Jernigan, adding continuous brick pavers, Americans with Disabilities Act-compliant pedestrian ramps, and classic lampposts that mirror downtown’s historic aesthetics. The public investment pairs directly with private momentum along the strip, where historic brick structures are being reimagined into gathering spaces, including the Left at the Pig craft brewery at 911 Jernigan.
Following the model successfully rolled out along Northside Drive, the city expects the corridor work to wrap up before year's end.
