Bear Lake County Airport is preparing for a major footprint expansion following a boost in state and federal aviation grant funding. Originally constructed as a military landing strip during World War II, the county-owned field between Paris and Montpelier has steadily grown into a preferred transit hub for cross-country pilots avoiding crowded metropolitan airspace.
Airport Manager Trevor Keetch notes that traffic averages 10 to 20 aircraft daily during peak summer months. The new funding will finance additional aircraft hangars, expanded apron tie-down space, and the infrastructure needed to introduce on-site jet fuel services. Beyond accommodating recreational and private aviation, the improvements will bolster emergency medical transport operations across southeastern Idaho. Valley aviation officials plan to break ground on the next round of hangar pads later this autumn.
