Palm Beach County commissioners voted unanimously this week to enact a full one-year moratorium on large-scale artificial intelligence data centers, freezing new commercial proposals while staff develop comprehensive zoning regulations. The freeze targets hyperscale facilities requiring peak electric loads of 50 megawatts or more, addressing mounting resident concerns over regional power grid stability, local water consumption, and industrial noise.
The issue escalated earlier this summer following intense neighborhood pushback against Project Tango, a million-square-foot data center proposed in the western corridor that commissioners subsequently rejected. Under the moratorium, which remains in effect through September 2027, county planners and outside technical consultants will study environmental baselines, assess aquifer impacts, and draft mandatory residential setbacks. County staff plan to present initial land-use findings and draft zoning ordinances to commissioners at public workshops early next year.
