Free Shuttle Routes and Stalls Set for Autumn Festival

Nebo, NC · October 5, 2026

Dense fog hangs low over the ridges this morning, but it will burn off just in time for Maker Monday at the YMCA.

The Lead

Downtown Marion is gearing up for its biggest autumn tradition of the year, the 43rd Annual Mountain Glory Festival arriving this Saturday. Behind the scenes this morning, city staff and local business owners are coordinating logistics for more than 150 regional craft artisans, food vendors, and two live entertainment stages spanning three blocks of Main Street.

For residents planning their weekend, the footprint brings familiar perks and adjustments. To ease side-street gridlock, municipal shuttles will run every 30 minutes from Marion City Square plaza, while accessible parking takes over the Community Building lot. Between the morning 5K race, the annual quilt show at the McDowell Arts Council, and afternoon polka on the City Stage, the festival offers an energetic seasonal reset. Main Street merchant storefronts will begin marking loading zones by Friday afternoon.

Spotlight & Story

  • Old Fort
    • In 1776, General Griffith Rutherford established a fortified stockade—Fort Davidson—along the Mill Creek frontier to protect westward settlers. Decades after the palisade fell into disuse, passing travelers continued calling the crossroads the "old fort," cementing the informal frontier shorthand forever.
