Grey morning skies are rolling off the bay just in time for an uncharacteristically mild walk to work. If your evening is open, basketball returns downtown tonight with plenty of energy to spare.

The Lead

Miami Beach’s free commuter water taxi service has ferried more than 155,000 passengers across Biscayne Bay since launching in January, and local leaders are already charting its next horizon. Operating between Maurice Gibb Memorial Park in Sunset Harbour and the Venetian Marina on the mainland, the 40-foot vessels have averaged over 1,000 daily riders during peak periods. The crossing has proven so popular that roughly 8% of waiting commuters are left at the docks during rush hours due to vessel capacity limits. In response, city officials recently secured Florida Department of Transportation grant funding for fiscal year 2027 and are pursuing county, federal, and private partnerships to buy larger boats and expand service north toward Mid Beach. Miami Beach commissioners plan to evaluate new docking agreements and private sponsorship proposals at an upcoming transit work session next month.
