County Resets Search for New Airport Hotel

Miami, FL · October 10, 2026

If you hear distant soca rhythms or brass bands before your first cup of coffee, blame the weekend's dueling festivities. Between early morning Carnival feathers and afternoon steins in Horse Country, our streets are wide awake today.

The Lead

A multi-year push to bring Miami International Airport its first new hotel in over six decades is back at square one. County officials confirmed this week that developers Stephen Ross and Jeffrey Soffer are walking away from their agreement to build a 451-room Westin near the Dolphin garage.

The project unraveled after the Federal Aviation Administration determined the proposed 150-foot structure would create a dangerous blind spot for airport radar systems. Subsequent redesign efforts failed to yield a concept the development team deemed economically feasible. Miami-Dade Aviation Director Ralph Cutié informed commissioners that the county is now terminating the 50-year lease, which had once been projected to deliver $240 million in public revenue. County administrators plan to issue a new competitive solicitation for the 1.8-acre site once legal termination paperwork is signed.
