State environmental regulators have formally opened a public review window on the operating discharge permit for the Mid America Agri Products/Wheatland ethanol plant along Road 338. The Nebraska Department of Water, Energy, and Environment is considering a renewed five-year National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System permit for the dry-grind milling facility, which processes area grain into fuel-grade ethanol, distillers grains, and corn oil. Under the proposed terms, the facility's combined process discharges continue under updated limits into an undesignated segment of Stinking Water Creek within the Republican River Basin, alongside managed land application across surrounding acres. As one of Perkins County's anchor grain buyers, the plant’s operating standards carry weight for both water monitoring and local farm logistics. Regulators in Lincoln will collect written public statements and evaluate hearing requests through September 18.
