The Lead
Work is officially underway on the Spring and Alameda Safety and Mobility Project, a long-planned infrastructure initiative linking Chinatown, Union Station, and Los Angeles State Historic Park. The corridor has spent decades acting as an intimidating barrier for anyone traveling on foot or on two wheels, but the redesign aims to change the feel of the neighborhood completely.
Crews have begun preliminary work on Class IV protected bicycle lanes, new signalized pedestrian crossings at Ann and Mesnager streets, and ADA-compliant curb ramps. The project also introduces a dedicated bus boarding island right outside the Chinatown A Line station, improving transit connections along one of the area’s busiest lines. Sidewalk adjustments and utility work will continue through early 2027, with LADOT phasing lane closures to preserve business access throughout construction.
