The Lead
Track work is officially shifting into high gear across the heart of the Valley. Metro finalized the $1.9 billion main construction contract for the East San Fernando Valley Light Rail line, cementing the joint build that will lay 6.7 miles of street-level track along Van Nuys Boulevard from the Metrolink station north to Pacoima.
The route introduces 11 new boarding platforms serving Van Nuys, Panorama City, and Arleta, marking the first passenger rail service to navigate the boulevard since the Pacific Electric streetcars stopped running in 1952. Beyond shaving commute times along one of the region’s most congested bus corridors, the project adds a 26-acre maintenance facility to support 33 dedicated trains. Heavy utility relocations and roadway reconfigurations roll outward across northern intersections next month.
