Behind the Glass Walls of the New Library Courtyard
Los Altos, CA · October 18, 2026
Dry leaves are skittering across Main Street under crisp morning skies. It is prime walking weather today, whether you are browsing storefronts or catching an afternoon art reception.
The Lead
Final concrete pours and structural framings are coming together on the north side of the Los Altos Library, bringing the long-planned Orchard View Courtyard into sharp focus ahead of its late-fall debut. Backed by a $2.5 million gift from the Los Altos Library Endowment, the 8,265-square-foot outdoor pavilion will seat up to 125 patrons under adjustable sunshades, complete with weatherproof charging stations and high-speed Wi-Fi.
What makes the project unique, however, is its glass perimeter wall facing the historic Civic Center apricot orchard. The transparent barrier answers months of civic debate, providing wind protection and open sightlines across more than 400 heritage trees planted by J. Gilbert Smith a century ago without encroaching on a single root zone. Landscaping crews will install drought-tolerant plantings and outdoor furnishings next month as the patio prepares for public opening ceremonies before Thanksgiving.
