Outdoor Reading Courtyard Takes Shape by the Heritage Orchard
Los Altos, CA · October 8, 2026
A high overcast sky keeps the morning glare at bay, just in time for an afternoon of storytelling and hands-on crafting down at the library.
The Lead
Patrons walking past the Los Altos Library this week may notice crews putting the finishing touches on the facility’s newest outdoor amenity: a dedicated reading courtyard overlooking the historic Heritage Orchard. Framed by transparent glass fencing to preserve open views of the apricot trees, the space features flexible seating for up to 125 visitors, built-in device charging stations, outdoor Wi-Fi, and adjustable canopy shades.
Across town, the Woodland Branch Library is also seeing steady progress on its expanded outdoor patio, an effort supported by funding from the Los Altos Library Endowment. Both projects are designed to turn routine library visits into fresh-air gatherings for book clubs, civic lectures, and study sessions without disrupting daily interior operating hours. City and library officials expect landscaping and final fixture installations to wrap up later this fall.
