Free Carnival Games and Top Weekend Plans to Book Early
Lecanto, FL · October 9, 2026
Watching the clouds roll low over the pines is today's morning forecast in a nutshell. Keep an umbrella handy through the afternoon, because the weekend schedule fills up fast the moment the workday wraps.
The Lead
With scattered rain prompting schedule tweaks across Citrus County, this weekend's fall entertainment is pivoting toward indoor stages and Sunday’s clearer skies. Organizers in Crystal River postponed Saturday’s 35th annual Scarecrow Fest to Halloween weekend, giving downtown Inverness top billing for fall crowds. The city’s month-long Cootertober celebration moves full speed ahead, anchored by Sunday’s free Cooter Carnival at Liberty Park from 1:00 to 5:00 PM, featuring neighborhood merchant games, food trucks, and family activities. Saturday night leans heavily into ticketed local theater, including the Valerie Theatre’s popular Cooter Comedy showcase and the annual ROCCS casino night fundraiser at the Depot District. For residents charting out weekend plans around the showers, reserving indoor seats in advance or aiming for Sunday’s lakeside festivities is the easiest way to avoid getting rained out.

Spotlight & Story
- The 1891 County Seat Vote
- On April 9, 1891, Lecanto came within a razor-thin margin of becoming the permanent capital of Citrus County. Across six bitter elections against Mannfield and Inverness, local voters rallied around Lecanto’s central geography before falling just short on the final tally.
