Live Music on the Square Kicks Off Cootertober Tonight
Lecanto, FL · October 1, 2026
Drizzle is tapping windshields early this morning, but October arrives with bustling calendars and live music on tap tonight.
The Lead
A nearly eight-decade chapter of local governance officially closes today as House Bill 4043 takes effect, dissolving the Citrus County Hospital Board. Created by the Florida Legislature in 1949 to build and operate Citrus Memorial Hospital, the special taxing district steered local medical care for generations before leasing hospital operations to HCA Healthcare under a 50-year agreement in 2013. With legacy audit disputes now settled and daily hospital management in private hands, state lawmakers determined the independent board had completed its public purpose. Effective this morning, all remaining board assets, property titles, and oversight of the long-term HCA lease transfer directly to the Board of County Commissioners. Meanwhile, the independent Citrus County Community Charitable Foundation continues its work uninterrupted, using annual lease revenues to award healthcare grants across local neighborhoods.
