County Ramps Up Mosquito Defenses, Plus Afternoon Library Workshops
Lecanto, FL · August 31, 2026
Rumbles of thunder are rolling across the ridge this morning. Keep an umbrella by the door before heading out into the afternoon dampness.
The Lead
Health and vector control teams across the county are stepping up surveillance and treatment efforts this week following a confirmed, locally acquired dengue fever case. Citrus County Mosquito Control has expanded truck-mounted fogging routes and deployed localized ground crews to target standing water in residential corridors throughout central Citrus.
Because late-summer storms routinely leave standing water in flowerpots, tarps, and birdbaths, officials are urging residents to inspect yards and dump out any stagnant pockets where larvae develop. Mosquito fish are also being distributed to property owners managing livestock troughs and ornamental ponds. Field teams will continue routine larviciding treatments in low-lying retention basins through the rest of the week.
