Local veterans from World War II through the Vietnam War touched down in the nation’s capital as part of the latest Flag City Honor Flight, escorted by one of Putnam County’s own native sons. General Steven Nordhaus, chief of the National Guard Bureau and senior military adviser to the secretary of defense, joined community organizers in Washington to greet the traveling northwest Ohio delegation and accompany them across national war memorials.
For the veterans on board, the fully sponsored journey provided a long-overdue moment of reflection alongside comrades and family members who shared the milestone at the capital’s iconic plazas. Volunteer guardians assisted travelers throughout a marathon itinerary before boarding the return charter back to Ohio. The traveling contingent arrives back home this week to airport welcome lines and private family celebrations.
