Turkeyfest Carnival Opens Thursday Ahead of the Big Weekend Race

Hochheim, TX · October 7, 2026

Catching a quiet sunrise over the pastures along Highway 183 is the best part of Wednesday morning. There is plenty stirring across the county before the weekend rush sets in.

The Lead

Preparations are running at full speed just down Highway 183 as the 54th Annual Cuero Turkeyfest begins its weekend run tomorrow. Festival volunteers and crews are putting the final touches on Cuero Municipal Park today ahead of Thursday evening's carnival opening and Chamber preview.

The multi-day celebration honors the region's deep agricultural roots and sets the stage for the annual Great Gobbler Gallop, where hometown champion turkey Ruby Begonia squares off against Minnesota contender Paycheck. Beyond Saturday morning's famous race down Main Street, the grounds will host carnival rides, an IBCA-sanctioned barbecue cook-off, and headlining concerts featuring William Clark Green and Tracy Lawrence. Weekend armbands and individual day tickets remain available at the gates, with early festival grounds access starting Thursday at 5:00 PM.

Spotlight & Story

  • Hochheim Alsatian immigrant Valentine Hoch hauled limestone by hand from the Guadalupe River bed in the 1850s to build his two-story hilltop house. Neighbors combined his surname—German for "high"—with "heim" for home, despite Anglo stage drivers initially dubbing the crossroads "Dutchtown".
