Crews are setting out orange barrels along Christian Street and Airport Road early today. Soak in the afternoon warmth while it lasts, because a sharp freeze moves in after sunset.

The Lead

As overnight temperatures plunge below freezing across the Upper Valley, the Upper Valley Haven is putting the finishing touches on operations at the newly dedicated Patrick and Marcelle Leahy Shelter and Resource Center at 608 North Main Street. Built on the former site of 25,000 Gifts, the two-story facility marks a permanent turning point for regional emergency housing.

Unlike the seasonal shelter in Lebanon that closed last spring, the new center operates year-round and 24 hours a day. Upstairs, twenty low-barrier semi-private pods offer nightly refuge with cots, storage, and personal lighting. Downstairs, a fully staffed daytime hub connects unhoused and precariously housed residents with caseworkers, hot meals, and computer terminals for benefits applications. Haven coordinators are currently conducting intake and fielding direct service requests on site as frost settles over the valley.

Spotlight & Story

  • Hartford Municipal Building
    • Before hosting Selectboard hearings and town clerks at 171 Bridge Street, the brick Hartford Municipal Building was the village graded school. Generations of local students remember fire drills that meant climbing into spiral steel tube chutes and rocketing down directly into fresh piles of sawdust.
