Night Work on Maple Street Rail Bridge, Plus New Downtown Exits

Hartford, VT · October 7, 2026

Catching the morning sun through the maple leaves is your best bet before the clouds settle in today. Keep an ear out for overnight rail repairs if you live anywhere near the underpass.

The Lead

State contractors and Vermont Agency of Transportation crews are underway with emergency structural repairs on Railroad Bridge 502, the rail span crossing Maple Street between Pine and Prospect streets right behind Town Hall.

Because the line remains active for freight and passenger service, crews are running much of the heavy rehabilitation overnight under floodlights. The nocturnal schedule keeps daytime road closures to a minimum along Maple Street, but neighbors living along the hill should expect industrial hums and machinery through the early morning hours.

The emergency work targets compromised steel and deck supports on the aging railway corridor running through the heart of the village. Town officials urge drivers and pedestrians to obey temporary flagging around the underpass during delivery windows. VTrans expects overnight shifts to continue through mid-October before engineers conduct final load-bearing tests.

  • Quechee Gorge Bridge
    • Built in 1911 by engineer John W. Storrs for the Woodstock Railroad, the span hangs 163 feet above the Ottauquechee River. When the railroad folded in 1933, Vermont paved over the ties for Route 4 rather than tearing down the steel.
