How to find garage sales this weekend
Last checked October 31, 2026.
Garage sales are posted in a handful of places, most of them a day or two before the weekend. Here is where to look, how to get to the good ones first, and what to check if you are holding one yourself.
The short answer
| Where | What you find there |
|---|---|
| Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace | Most neighborhood garage and yard sales, often with photos, posted in the days before |
| EstateSales.net | Estate sales, tag sales and auctions, many run by estate sale companies |
| Nextdoor and local Facebook groups | Block sales and neighborhood-wide sale days |
| Your town’s classifieds | Sales posted by neighbors, and the city’s own citywide sale day |
Where sales get posted
- Craigslist and Facebook Marketplace: search your town or ZIP code and “garage sale” or “yard sale”. Sort by date so this weekend’s sales come first.
- EstateSales.net lists estate sales and auctions across the country. Estate sales usually have whole households of furniture and tools, and the first morning draws a line.
- Nextdoor and neighborhood Facebook groups are where block sales and subdivision-wide sale days get announced.
- Your city or HOA newsletter often announces a citywide or neighborhood garage sale weekend, sometimes with a map of every address taking part.
- MailerDot’s classifieds for your town take free listings from neighbors, and the town’s events page shows what is on this weekend.
Planning a Saturday
- Look the night before: many sales are posted only a day or two ahead.
- Map the addresses and start with the ones that list what you want, or that say “estate”, “moving” or “multi-family”.
- Go early for the best pick, and late for the best prices: many sellers would rather discount than haul things back inside.
- Bring small bills and coins, a bag, and a tape measure if you are hunting furniture.
Holding your own sale
Many cities require a permit, usually free, and limit how often you can hold a sale and where the signs go. Two examples: Boca Raton, Florida, issues a free permit online, allows up to four sales a year at one address, each for no more than two days between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., with one sign on the property. Cape Coral, Florida, allows three sales a year at one address, each one to three days and at least 30 days apart, with one sign and four directional signs, none on medians or street signs.
- Search your city’s website for “garage sale permit” before you post anything.
- Keep signs off utility poles and street signs, and take them down when the sale ends.
- List the sale two or three days ahead, with the date, the hours and a few of the best items.
Questions people ask
When do garage sales start? The listing gives the hours, and some cities set them: Boca Raton allows sales only from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
Do I need a permit for a garage sale? It depends on your city. Many require a free permit and limit you to a few sales a year. Search your city’s website for “garage sale permit”.
What is the difference between a garage sale and an estate sale? A garage sale is a household selling what it no longer wants. An estate sale usually sells most of a home’s contents, and is often run by an estate sale company.
