A bustling weekend across downtown gave way to construction fences early this morning, kicking off a long-awaited park transformation on the south side.

Crews are breaking ground today on the Central Park Block Project, launching an ambitious expansion that will nearly double downtown's green space to 2.7 acres by late 2027. The reimagined civic hub will feature an expansive great lawn, an outdoor amphitheater, interactive splash pads, and a grand staircase connecting the park directly to Brand Boulevard.

While the Central Library and Adult Recreation Center will stay open throughout construction, their surface parking lots are now fully closed. Visitors can instead park at the Marketplace Structure on South Artsakh Avenue, with three hours of free parking via front-desk validation. Adult Recreation Center drop-offs now enter exclusively from Louise Street and exit onto Colorado Street as utility excavation begins.
