Prescribed Burn Window Opens Monday Near Pine Swamp
Frederick, MD · November 7, 2026
Wrap your hands around a warm mug and take your time downtown—First Saturday brings open galleries and extended shop hours across the center today. Plenty of good excuses to get outside and explore before dusk settles in.
The Lead
Forestry crews are preparing to set fire to a corner of the mountain next week to save an aging grove. The city and Maryland Department of Natural Resources announced that a controlled burn will take place on the watershed's northern edge near Pine Swamp between November 9 and 20. The target is a roughly 90-year-old stand of pitch pine that is struggling to regenerate beneath a thick duff layer and encroaching hardwood saplings. Low flames will clear the forest floor, allowing heat-dependent cones to drop viable seed and sprout new growth. Expect visible smoke plumes drifting over Catoctin Mountain when operations commence. Hikers and mountain bikers should take note: Gambrill Park Road will close between Fishing Creek Road and Gate R6 on burn day, alongside all northeastern trails. Forest managers will confirm the exact date once wind and humidity cooperate.
